Book My TestWhat Happens During a Backflow Test?
A backflow preventer is a valve assembly that stops contaminated water — from your irrigation system, pool, or fire line — from flowing backward into the clean drinking-water supply. Phoenix's cross-connection control program requires it tested every year because these valves have springs, seals, and check valves that wear out.
The 20-minute test, step by step
- Shutoff & inspection — we shut off water to the device and visually inspect for leaks, corrosion, and damage.
- Gauge testing — using a calibrated differential-pressure gauge, we test each check valve and relief valve against ASSE standards.
- Pass or fail — a passing device gets its report filed with the city. A failing device gets an honest repair-or-replace quote.
The three device types you'll see in Phoenix
| Device | Where it's used | Typical test notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB) | Residential irrigation — the most common in Phoenix | Must be installed 12" above the highest sprinkler head |
| Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) | Commercial, high-hazard connections | Has a relief valve that discharges water — needs a drain |
| Double Check Valve (DCVA) | Fire lines, some commercial | No relief valve; tested differently than RPZ |
Phoenix rule to know: test reports must reach the city within 10 days of the test. We file for you — it's included in the $89.
What we don't do
We don't upsell you a new irrigation system. We don't invent failures. If your device passes, you get your filed report and we're gone in 30 minutes.
